Before 1960, the Bombay Province united Marathi, Konkani, and Gujarati-speaking communities within a shared cultural landscape. The Samyukta Maharashtra movement, marked by the sacrifice of 107 lives, led to the formation of Maharashtra and Gujarat on May 1, 1960.
Yet even as borders were drawn, culture remained undivided.
Across Palghar district and Nashik district, traditions, languages, and ways of life continue to flow into one another—shaped by generations of coexistence. Here, harmony is lived daily through shared festivals, blended practices, and enduring oral traditions.
Through initiatives by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, these living cultures are opening new pathways, inviting visitors to engage meaningfully with local heritage and community life.
This Maharashtra Day, we honour not only a historic moment, but a living legacy—of sacrifice, pride, and quiet unity.

On World Intellectual Property Day, we celebrate the power of creativity and the importance of protecting ideas, traditions, and innovations—recognizing that cultural expressions are living identities deserving respect and protection.
One such expression is Warli Painting, a traditional practice of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra. With its minimal white motifs on earthy backgrounds, it depicts everyday life, nature, and rituals through simple geometric forms. Traditionally practiced by women, it was prominently drawn on walls during marriage ceremonies and festive occasions.
Today, this art form has evolved beyond its traditional walls and is now created on a variety of surfaces, including paper canvas and other contemporary mediums, allowing it to reach wider audiences while retaining its cultural essence.
Warli painting received a Geographical Indication tag in 2014, helping preserve its authenticity while supporting artist's’ livelihoods.
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is developing cultural heritage-based experiential tourism in Palghar and Nashik (www.heritagevillagesmtdc.com), creating immersive opportunities to engage with living traditions like Warli art while supporting local artist communities and preserving indigenous cultural heritage.
